History
In 2010, Adelaide experienced a growing influx of medical professionals arriving from Bangladesh. As the number of Bangladeshi healthcare professionals increased, so did the need for a dedicated organisation to support their transition and integration into both professional and social life in Australia.
Many newly arrived doctors faced challenges including cultural adjustment, social isolation, and navigating the Australian healthcare system. At that time, there was no formal representative body available to provide structured guidance, mentorship, or community support.
Recognising this need, a small group of senior Bangladeshi doctors working in Adelaide established an informal network known as “Doctors in Adelaide.” The group played a valuable role in supporting fellow doctors and medical graduates through educational sessions, AMC examination preparation, career mentoring, and job interview guidance.
As participation and activities expanded, it became clear that a more formal and sustainable structure was required. This led to the formation of the Bangladeshi Australian Medical Society of South Australia (BAMSSA). BAMSSA was formally established on 03 November 2013 during a General Meeting held at Thebarton Community Centre, where the constitution of the association was adopted. The organisation subsequently received certification as a registered association on 21 November 2013.
Although BAMSSA was initially established with the primary objective of supporting Bangladeshi International Medical Graduates (IMGs) to successfully navigate the AMC examination process and transition into the Australian healthcare system, its vision gradually expanded over time. The association broadened its objectives to include continuing professional development, facilitating observership opportunities, creating networking platforms and strengthening collegial relationships through social events, while organising a range of educational and community activities.
The first Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) was held on 22 June, 2014 at Fogolar Furlan Incorporated Hall, marking an important milestone in the organisation’s early development.
